The idea to create this network had grown from recent collaborative teaching and research initiatives between the UvA (Archaeology and Conservation departments), University of Leiden (Archaeology department), RCE (research department) and  the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Conservation Department). It has long been apparent that while research into ceramic and glass artefacts is being actively undertaken in the Netherlands, there is very little communication between researchers and research departments leading to a lack of knowledge as to who is doing what, where. There is a growing desire for discussion, and, where possible, collaboration and the sharing of data.

Aims
  • To develop a network of ceramic and glass researchers and improve communication between researchers, teachers and students
  • Be open to a broad range of research areas related to ceramic and glass: archaeology, conservation; ancient, modern; objects, architectural materials.
  • Organise an annual one-day informal symposium where research and developments in the field of ceramic and glass analysis can be presented and discussion encouraged.
  • Long-term aims include sharing of databases and collaborative research.

A Kick-Off meeting was held on the 5th of March 2015, where invited researchers presented themselves and discussed the future of the network. After receiving enthusiastic replies to the survey we sent out following this meeting, we are proceeding with the core group from the last meeting and propose to hold two half-day meetings a year: one institutional visit and one informal symposium to present new or ongoing research. This, amongst other developments, will be discussed at the next meeting.

The next meeting of the core group of the network will be on the 8th of December 2017.

The Research Network was initiated by Kate van Lookeren Campagne (UvA), Dennis Braeckmans (UL/TUD), Jill Hilditch (UvA), Isabelle Garachon (RMA), Luc Megens (RCE).
